- In my opinion CHT’s mission is to keep technology from getting too out of hand in terms of how we use it, while acknowledging that they can be used as tools useful to society. I completely agree with this mission as I don’t agree with how some technology such as AI has advanced very quickly, it seems to have no limitations, and if it continues I truly believe it will do more harm than good. I also agree with the tackling use of social media as it is not so much of a need but a want that has many people blind due to it’s ability to spread misinformation rapidly and it’s seemingly hypnotizing effect.
- I believe CHT’s analysis of social media because as an advert user of it over the years I have watched certain platforms like Instagram become more business driven and ongoing as they now have endless scrolling outside of who you’re following and ads tailored to what you may have looked up. I wasn’t surprised when they discussed the link between the brain and social media because I see how businesses often tailor the way they operate based on how the brain works like using $59.99 instead of $60, I’ve read that although it’s one cent consumers often would rather purchase an item that has the cents on it because our minds trick us into believing it’s less that what it is. I haven’t seen major changes in social media in the past year as I’ve seen over the decade, just your average pointless updates.
- My reaction of CHT’s analysis of AI is scared, as I’m not an avid user most of the things I’ve read I’ve never thought about. It is much more than just a danger to our climate but also our brains and livelihoods. I do feel like the article is a bit dramatic as we cannot foresee the future and AI may just be a trend and it’s usage may go down as I do see people critiquing it more and more as it advances. I found the topic of relationships very interesting, especially how they stated AI is used as an emotional tool people depend on, I do what to ask what if AI develops the intelligence to disagree and become more human? Would that stray users away or make them become more dependent?
- The podcast also gave me a quite scary reaction as they spoke on AI being able to self-preserve, I’ve never thought of that and It made me think what if both China and US stop using it, will it still have the ability to upgrade and ultimately turn on humans as we’ve seen in movies? I’d like to believe that is simple science fiction but the podcast and article made me think broadly and there are a few unanswered questions.
- After viewing this material I think the bad may outweigh the good on how it may effect social work. If AI can advance in a way that allows it to be less people-pleasing, it could lead to them potentially taking jobs and with the way our country is going I believe they would rather put the money into AI instead of humans who may make mistakes or sometimes take advantage of job positions, by being lazy. I do feel like social work services it may affect positively if it is simply used as what it is, a tool. not substitution for humans.

I had another thought while reading your post. I worry about AI being too agreeable as well! I am not sure how much AI could challenge a client to talk about deeper issues and to explore vulnerabilities. That seems like such a human attribute and one that can’t be replicated. This is why I don’t truly think that AI would take social work positions, but I guess that goes along with the unknown. I did find comfort in what you said, ” I do feel like social work services it may affect positively if it is simply used as what it is, a tool. not substitution for humans.” This is true and I need to keep reminding myself of this!
I think you brought up some really good points, especially about how fast Al is moving and how that can feel scary. I also agree with you on the social media thing because it really does feel more like a want than a need, but people get so caught up in it that it almost feels like one. I liked what you said about Al being more of a tool than a replacement because I feel the same way. I use Ai as a resource and companion all the time (Lol). If it is kept in that place, it could actually help, but once it starts completely replacing real that’s when we’re too far gone.
