AI and the Workforce

The VandeHei and Mike Allen article explored how quickly entry level tech positions will be eradicated due to the implementation of AI. The article noted that this transition in the workforce is happening now. The VandeHei and Allen article notes that humans can not compete with AI. I found this the most concerning as there is no way to increase your skills to avoid termination because of AI. An entire generation of entry level workers will need to find employment elsewhere and soon.

Thankur article noted that there are only a few companies that control AI technology and they determine how AI is used on both a corporate level and for the everyday person. This article did provide solutions to resolve the monopoly that has become AI.  I would be interested to see if any of the solutions come to fruition most notably the Universal Basic Income and the Public owned AI. I had not consider how much public AI was needed until this article.

The Mattlar article is very different from the VandeHei article. The Mattlar article notes that AI is not the cause of the mass layoffs from tech companies at all. Mattlar reported that tech companies are lying!! The article notes that the layoffs are attributed to over hiring and poor planning during the pandemic. This article left me wandering if the VandeHei and Allen article was completely true.

AI experiment Results- I still feel guilty using AI just knowing how much water is being used for simple searches and how dangerous AI can be.  The AI responses were interesting as they were not as generic as I believed they would be.  I admittedly was unsure of what prompts to use but Chat GPT provided suggestions after my initial prompt. I do think AI will eventually be regulated by the government and their will be jobs created to regulate and monitor AI.

I enjoyed reading your blog post. You have made some great points and observations in reference to how each article talks about AI in the workplace. These large companies are using AI as an excuse to terminate people and eliminate positions. If we could never truly measure up to AI, why was AI created in the first place. Yes, I use AI and would love to continue using AI. However I want human connection, working in my passion, and I do not want to compete with a robot. Now that I know about the affect that AI has on water, I want to be more cautious with using AI, however will enough people do the same in order to have a greater impact.

    Tierra,

You start off on the right path with your discussion of the articles. I agree that the solutions in the Thakur article were interesting. Building a public version of AI, while it sounds good, could be worse – at least at the moment, right? Also, companies are mis-representing the reasons for layoffs, that is what the article maintains. Some would suggest that this is because of the uncertainty that AI is creating. This author believes it is a cost reduction strategy. If you had concerns about “truth” of the article, you are always able to check it out a number of different ways. I suspect these were more about opinions.

I would have liked to hear more about your experience with AI, as that was the point of the assignment.
