Before I read “Behind the Curtain: A white-collar bloodbath:”, I had not considered how other technological advances have wiped out jobs in the past, but how AI is also different. Other inventions created opportunities for new jobs, but as AI advances and begins to do the job itself, many industries will be deeply impacted. I think the main point of this article is to reveal how AI is turning from augmentation to automation and what we can do about this. I do think that this article made their point very clear, and it was interesting to hear the perspective of the CEO and what he thinks we should be doing.
After reading “The Social Contract Is Breaking, and AI Is Holding the Hammer” I learned that 94,000 people lost their jobs in tech in the first half of the year. My dad was let go from his tech job at the beginning of the year for “business restructuring” as well, but seeing the mass number of people this effects is very shocking. The article suggests that millions of people should consider switching occupations. I think the point of this article is to show how fast AI is moving and how we cannot just “out skill” it.
While reading “Companies Are Blaming AI for Layoffs. The Real Reason Will Piss You Off.”, I found out that companies are blaming AI for layoffs that they already were planning to do. This was shocking to read but it made a lot of sense. I can imagine that a CEO would rather sound like their making an innovate decision than a cheap one. I believe the point of this article is to show that companies taking advantage of their workers is not a new concept. I believe they do a great job of demonstrating their point because I found the article to be very compelling.
While analyzing the articles using AI, I learned that AI not only simplifies what it is analyzing, but it also makes it more appealing to read by using emojis and various fonts. This can make the information more digestible for the reader.
I found it very interesting that ChatGPT found the second article, Companies Are Blaming AI for Layoffs. The Real Reason Will Piss You Off more persuasive. It claims that it uses more data and that the article admits that “AI will matter and AI can automate tasks”. ChatGPT claims that the other article is not persuasive because it does not offer consistent logic. It is definitely intriguing that the AI preferred the article that did not blame AI.
My emotional reaction to using this tool was an eerie feeling. It felt dystopian asking an AI chat box it’s opinion on AI. I think we are heading to a place where we need to be more and more vigilant about the technology we are using and how it may effect us. I also liked the ideas mentioned in the articles about possibly creating a tax for AI use within companies.
I am attaching a photo from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory because the father losing his job at the toothpaste factory always crosses my mind when I hear about layoffs due to new technology.

Ally,
You are all helping me decide how I will do this exercise differently in the future. The real issue with prompts is important. What you ask and how you ask it will definitely affect what you get. if I am understanding your description of your experience, ChatGPT said that the article about layoffs was more PERSUASIVE. It didn’t say it was necessarily more accurate or more factual. Did it tell you why it found that article more persuasive? That would have been a good follow up question. What we need to do, believe, it to teach you how to use AI to learn and think, not to do your work for you. Good job on the post.
