  1. The mission of CHT is to support user to best use technology and understand motivation behind technology. My opinion is that this is a valiant effort and likely offers a needed perspective.
  2. I do believe CHT analysis of social media is accurate for the most part. I believe anyone who has used any social media platform in the past few years has fallen pray to the “doom scrolling” and I have heard a few people in my life refer to it as their escape or time to check out when scrolling. We have also seen the way social media can play a roll in politics and even news, as recent as this week with Nepal and Kirk. I was not surprised by discussion of social media and the brain, the idea that corporations are manipulating us to consume their product seems obvious. I believe social media has changed in the past year for everyone differently depending what algorithm you are consuming. In some ways it feels to have become more and more niche according to your interest. I reset my Instagram algorithm this year and have seen a drastic change in my “for you” page and it has improved my experience. But then again wasn’t that the platforms goal.
  3. I liked the shaping of argument around AI from CHT and the 5 problem areas. I agree and disagree with the “work, dignity and meaning” area. I believe as a society some rolls can be automated with AI and with checks and balances the technology can free up human power for more meaningful task. On the other hand what defines meaningful work. What one may see as remedial might bring the next person great joy.
  4. The podcast on rogue AI was interesting and eye opening. I was not aware of the rates at which and lengths the AI systems are willing to go for self preservation. The risk larger businesses and organizations are taking seems unnecessary and possibly the product of capitalism, need to have the newest and greatest for consumers. The idea of a rogue system with no checks and balances seems like the thing of a sci-fi movie but also close to current reality.
  5. I believe the impact can have duality, with positive and negative impact on social work. AI can be used to free up social workers with chatbots for FAQs or simple questions, especially when funding is no increasing to increase staffing but needs continue to rise in many communities. Also, negatively what long term effects will social workers see, politicalization of issues making our work more difficult and increased mental health issues due to sense of reality and connection among society.

    Hello aoconnor1,

I enjoy the image you picked! There’s a lot of emotion on AI generated image. That is how I felt while listening to the podcast.

I understand your take on social media. Especially when it comes to instagram because the system does create an algorithm and only show you the things you have been interacting with. Each person’s feed could look, and talk about completely different things even though you are on the same social media platform. I believe that is where social media has changed in the last year.

Also, thank you for your take on social workers. you stated “Also, negatively what long term effects will social workers see, politicalization of issues making our work more difficult and increased mental health issues due to sense of reality and connection among society. ” I did not think about that at all. Mental health concerns in the youth as well as in adult as it relates to AI and social media is something we have to be focused on. Social workers will have to work with a large population of individuals who has been a victim of this mass produce and evolving technology.

Hey Amanda! Nice to see you here! Something your response made me ponder on was that effect the doom scrolling has on those of us who view it as our “down” time…because it isn’t really down time at all. Instead of actually relaxing or turning off, we are hyper focusing on screens and content, consuming more info than could ever be good for us. I often wonder how that affects my own nervous system and it definitely concerns me when thinking of it for the collective whole. Also as a parent, raising our kids with this new avenue of stimuli and brainmelt content vs downtime or boredom…sometimes is it overwhelming to consider.
