The Center for Humane Technology (CHT) is a group of tech-savvy friends who have researched the impact of platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube on people’s lives, as well as the influence of AI. The CHT tries to make people understand how those platforms aim to keep them scrolling endlessly and take away the one thing we can never get back: time, but instead have technology work for us.
Especially in the younger generation, minutes can turn into hours, and many users admit they have an addiction, and they take the phone with them everywhere to watch something. Many times, this gets people to have anxiety and depression because they compare their lives with “perfect” images portrayed in those videos and pictures. What should be taught in schools is how to use AI ethically and understand that, at times, AI generates misinformed content.
AI can be utilized in social work for research purposes, to locate resources for clients, connect social workers with clients virtually, and assist with recording sessions and note-taking, but it should be used only to empower people responsibly and effectively.
I agree that AI can give false information, but like humans and their creators, AI will do whatever it takes to survive. That primal instinct in place and a knowledge of surprising histories’ greatest minds make it dangerous. I think AI use should start being limited. Technology has significant upside for all professions, but the downside might outweigh the upside.
I agree with the aspect of the addiction and I don’t think it’s just the younger generation. I do find myself scrolling aimlessly, almost like a break from work or school, and then those minutes are hours and I have to stop myself. I do take these social media, playing games, and responding to group chats breaks or have my phone on a “DND” mode at night. There’s a day that I absolutely disconnect from technology and just focus on some quiet time, breathing, and meditation. We all have to have a healthy balance, especially since most of us are using technology for our classes and at work.
Hello, I agree with positive uses of AI and tech in social work. AI can sift through the web and online pages for resources for client at rapid pace that might take a resource specialist hours or days of work to gather information. The potential in assistance to workforce is amazing but also coupled with risk of AI going unchecked.
Hello! I wonder if you have thought about the impact on older generations as well? I often find that boomers are even more compromised by their relationship to social media than millennials or others.
Hi, I feel everyone who uses it daily has an addiction, I cannot blame them as the creators basically created and keep advancing it for that reason.
@Miranda, yes you have raised a great point about the impact of Ai and tech on the older generation. This is the generation that is often times targeted with scams and also making a phone call to conduct business can be challenging especially with automated assistance, speaking into a phone to an automated assistance, and the huge gap of communication . I also agree that everyone can be affected by technology and become addicted to the use of it!
