Technology has become an integral part of social work practice.  It is used for the collection of data for assessments, the delivery of services and aids in the extension of care to a greater number of recipients and in a shorter time frame.

Technology can best serve social workers when guidelines are set for privacy and security, the management of information, the delivery of services, and the use and storage of information.

For the social worker utilizing technology as an enhancement tool to provide service, some factors and guidelines must be in place.  There must be the privacy and security of the client, a secure network, the competency of the social workers to use the application, and who will have access to the data and data storage.

The use of technology has enhanced client interactions. Some clients feel they are better served if they can utilize a technological service that they are most comfortable with, for example tele-health for appointments, while some may prefer in-person services. Either way, some form of technology will be in use for servicing the client.  Additionally, there are mobile applications in different aspects of the practice such as DSM- 5 for psychiatric diagnosis and Waze for direction to client’s location. These technological advancements have enhanced the practice of social work.
