Integrating telehealth services in social work practice for vulnerable groups

In recent years, telehealth has been adopted in the delivery of services by social workers, particularly since the onset of COVID-19 and the need emerged as an alternative to in-person services.

In social work, telehealth is important because of its wide reach and increased client access.   Social workers practice in a variety of settings; healthcare, schools, child and elder protective services, and community housing agencies, to name a few.  Telehealth’s use has shown to offer similar outcomes as in-person services.  Due to the scope of social work, the social worker needs to be educated on the state guidelines for the ethical use of this technology to support vulnerable groups.  This includes ensuring that social workers are aware of the risks and benefits this service can have on a specific group.  Access and use of the technology that is required for this service can also be a barrier to receiving this service, in that case, a client may opt for an in-person appointment.   My opinion is that it is important for social work development and vulnerable groups.
